Maharashtra Day – Why Do We Celebrate It?
Every year on May 1st, people across Maharashtra celebrate Maharashtra Day with pride and joy. Why is Maharashtra Day celebrated?
Maharashtra Day is celebrated to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra. On May 1, 1960, Maharashtra was created as a separate state in India. Earlier, there was a large state called Bombay State, which included present-day Maharashtra and Gujarat. People from different parts of the region spoke different languages. The people who spoke Marathi and Konkani wanted a separate state for themselves. After many peaceful protests and movements, the government of India decided to divide Bombay State into two states: Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Maharashtra Day is a way to honour that moment. It shows the spirit of unity, culture, and the hard work of the people who made it happen. Every year, schools, government offices, and citizens celebrate this day with parades, cultural events, and flag hoisting ceremonies.
Is Maharashtra Day and Labour Day the same?
Many people get confused between Maharashtra Day and Labour Day because both fall on May 1st. However, they are not the same.
- Maharashtra Day is a state-level celebration that marks the formation of Maharashtra in 1960.
- Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is a global event. It is a day to honour the contributions and rights of workers across the world.
Both days are important in their own way. On this day, government offices in Maharashtra remain closed in honour of both events. But the reason behind each day is different. Maharashtra Day is about regional pride, while Labour Day is about worker rights and respect.
What happened on May 1, 1960, in India?
On May 1, 1960, the Bombay Reorganization Act came into effect. This act was passed by the Indian Parliament to divide the Bombay State into two new states: Maharashtra and Gujarat.
This decision was taken after years of struggle by the people who wanted a state based on language. Many Marathi-speaking people had demanded their own state. They believed that language is an important part of identity. The movement was led by several leaders and supported by lakhs of people. Their efforts paid off when Maharashtra was officially formed.
Since then, May 1st is celebrated as Maharashtra Day to remember this historic event.

महाराष्ट्र दिवस का जश्न एक खास है जिसने कुछ मुख्य भाषा की मांगीक और जानजातिक एकजुटता के लिए नये राज्य की रचना की मांग की थी और एक नये राज्य की स्थापना की घोषणा की थी।
1 मई 1960 को बॉम्बे रीओगार्न एक्ट के तेहत ने पुरानी बॉम्बे राज्य को दो नए नए राज्यों में बांट दिया गया – महाराष्ट्र और गुजरात। यह औकास माराठी भाषा की झुद्धा और संकार्ष की निशान की याद में मनाया जाता है।
क्या महाराष्ट्र डे और लेबर डे एक ही हैं?
नहीं, ये दोनों की औचि मतलब एक ही दिन पर होने के कारण एक साथ में नाहीं हैं, लेकिन औन के अर्थ अलग-अलग हैं। महाराष्ट्र डे जहां की राज्य की निर्माण की खुशी मानी जाती है, वहीं लेबर डे का जोड़ा और कार्मिकों के अधिकारों को याद करने के लिए बी जाता जाती हैं।
History of Maharashtra Day
The demand for a separate Marathi-speaking state began in the early 1950s. People from different parts of the Bombay State felt that having a state based on language would help preserve their culture and support better governance. The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement (United Maharashtra Movement) played a very big role in this process. Many people joined this movement peacefully. Some even gave their lives during protests in Mumbai and other areas.
After much discussion, the Government of India finally accepted the request. On May 1, 1960, Maharashtra was born. Cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik became important parts of the new state. Today, Maharashtra is one of the most developed and powerful states in India. It is known for its strong economy, rich culture, and the hardworking nature of its people.
